VENTED SPEAKER DESIGN
Version 1.0
written by Steve Platt
SPEAKER.EXE is a program that calculates the proper Thiele-Small
alignment for any given speaker. The program assumes that the user is
familiar with Thiele-Small parameters. Any user that isn't, is advised
to read A.N. Thiele's and Richard Small's original articles in the
Journal of the Audio Engineering Society or articles published in many
audio magazines such as Speaker Builder.
The program will calculate the proper box and vent volume for a
perfect alignment or let the user enter his own box and vent volume.
The program can then draw the response curve, the thermal and
displacement limit curve, or a simulated square wave response. These
curves can then be printed on any Epson FX, IBM, or compatible printer.
The program also can graph the response curves for a speaker as the box
or vent volume is stepped across a range of values.
The response and limit curves are plotted from 15 to 500 Hz with a
vertical scale of +5 to -16 dB. The 0 dB point corresponds to the
maximum output level based on the max input power rating of the speaker.
The displacement limit curve shows the maximum output of the speaker vs.
frequency due to physical limitations. If the response curve crosses
above the displacement curve, the speaker will begin to distort severely
or even bottom out.
The program tries to be easy to use providing menus and default
choices where possible. When the program requests information, a default
answer is usually shown if square brackets. Pressing the enter key will
accept the default choice.
One feature not clearly shown, involves the efficiency of the driver.
The program prompts for the efficiency in percent. If the entered value
is more than 80, the program assumes that the value is in dB/Watt and
converts it to percent.
The program provides three different alignment series. The first is
C4 - SC4 which is fourth order Chebyshev at high Qt's and sub-Chebyshev
at low Qt's. The second is QB3 - SQB3 which is fourth order quasi-
Butterworth at low Qt's and super quasi-Butterworth at high Qt's.
The third is BB4 - SBB4 which is fourth order boom box at high Qt's
and sub-boom box at lower Qt's as defined by W. Hoge is "A New Set of
Vented Loudspeaker Alignments", JAES, vol 25, 1977.
The Maximally Flat Alignment is QB3 at the lower Qt's and switches to
C4 at the higher Qt's.
The program will on any IBM compatible computer CGA, EGA, VGA, or
Hercules graphics. A Hercules card requires that the companion program
'MSHERC.COM' be run before starting 'SPEAKER.EXE'. A math coprocessor
is not required but is recommended for graphics speed.
This program is distributed as Shareware. This means you are
encouraged to copy it and give it to your friends. All I ask is that if
you like it and use it, please send $10 to the address displayed at the
end of the program.
